The Student Prince
Alpenrose Opera House
6149 SW Shattuck Rd Portland
The plot of the rollicking operetta The Student Prince sounds like a modern teen rom-com -- the sheltered prince of a fictitious German kingdom goes to college, where he hooks up with some hard-drinking friends, gets his party on and falls in love with a local girl, before royal duty calls him back to his boring old life. Actually though, the musical was the longest-running Broadway show of the '20s, and the Sigmund Romberg score is famed for it memorable ballads, dance pieces and marches, including "Serenade," "Golden Days," "Drinking Song" and "Deep in My Heart, Dear." The Light Opera of Portland stages this production at Alpenrose Dairy Opera House, and follows it up, as is their usual practice, with post-show ice-cream sundaes.
