The Pianist of Willesden Lane
Portland Center Stage
128 NW Eleventh Avenue Portland
Grammy-nominated pianist Mona Golabek pays moving tribute to her pianist mother -- a survivor of the Holocaust and the London Blitz -- in this hit concert drama directed by Hershey Felder. Golabek, seated onstage at the piano, performs some of the world's most beloved piano music while sharing harrowing true tales of her mother's life. As a young Jewish pianist in 1938 Vienna, Golabek's mother, Lisa Jura, dreamt of a concert debut at the storied Musikverein concert hall. But when she was swept up in the Kindertransport to London in an attempt to protect her from the Nazi regime, everything about Jura's life was upended -- except her love of music. The Los Angeles Times called The Pianist of Willesden Lane "an arresting, deeply affecting triumph." Catch Golabek, who won the 2015 Outstanding Solo Performance Award from The San Diego Theatre Critics Circle for her performance, when The Pianist of Willesden Lane comes to Gerding Theater at the Armory.
